CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Three weeks later the picture had cleared.
Lexi hadn’t seen Kyle, who had been on the road. Their phone calls were less frequent and not as long as they used to be. The conversation, on her end at least, seemed a bit strained.
The fact that he had an ex and a child was always lurking in the back of her mind. She knew she had to be strong and probably break things off.
Still, she missed him. His fantastic dates, his quick wit, which gave her a run for her money, his incredible kisses.
Meanwhile, Jake had continued their whirlwind courtship, taking her on elaborate dates. The world of limousines, private planes, helicopters, restaurants that opened just for them, and all that came with dating a celebrity, was intoxicating. She knew she had to remove the rose-colored glasses, that money shouldn’t be a factor in how she felt about him. But the lifestyle he offered was something out of a fairy tale. It was very hard to overlook.
However, today was Thanksgiving. Jake was playing in Dallas while Kyle had invited her a month ago to a family dinner.
It would be the perfect time to find out once and for all what he’d been hiding from her. And if she couldn’t find out by the end of the day, she’d confront him with it.
And if it was true, she’d say goodbye. Not being able to trust someone was a deal breaker.
She headed up the walk to their Staten Island home, already looking festive with colorful arrangements of gourds, maize, and a large ceramic turkey on the front porch. She heard loud conversation as she stepped on the front porch and rang the bell. She saw someone moving toward her through the beveled glass and realized it was Donna. Kyle’s sister opened the door and smiled. “Lexi, you made it! So happy to have you join us this year. Come on in.”
Lexi stepped inside as Donna closed the door. “Thanks for inviting me. I picked up a cheesecake in case you didn’t have enough desserts.”
“This is an Italian family, Lexi. We’re never short of food. But thank you, and I know it won’t go to waste.”
Donna led her down the hall just as Kyle turned the corner. He spotted her, smiled and quickly moved forward, giving her a strong hug that lifted her off the ground. “Damn, I missed you.” His embrace brought back all the wonderful memories for a moment, seeming to drain any negative feelings from her.
He put her down and she kissed him on the cheek. “Missed you too. You’ve been out of town too long.”
“I’m home for a while. We can catch up. I’m really glad you could come today. Hopefully my very loud family won’t scare you away.” He led her into a huge, beautifully decorated living room filled with a lot of people and loud conversation. “Everyone, this is Lexi. Lexi, everyone.”
They all yelled hello.
And then a statuesque redhead, who had to be six-foot-two in her heels headed in her direction.
